Visiting the Dentist regularly ensures that the health of your teeth and gums is watched after by an experienced professional. A Dentist will look for changes in your mouth to look for Oral Cancer or Periodontal Disease; either of them are serious health conditions.

Your Periodontal Exam will be performed by either the Dentist or the Hygienist and will be provided at your six month checkup. During the exam, the dentist or hygienist will look for deep pockets around your teeth. The results of this test will tell them a lot about the health of your gums.

If there are deep pockets between your teeth and gums, the depth of those pockets can tell the dentist what stage of Periodontal Disease you are in. Other things that are considered are the amount of bleeding, how inflamed the gums are, if your teeth are loose, or if the presence of pus can be found.

Gingivitis, Periodontitis, and Advanced Periodontitis are the stages of Periodontal Disease. These stages can be broken down further into Gingivitis, Chronic Periodontal Disease, Aggressive Periodontal Disease, and Necrotizing Periodontal Disease; all of which are serious conditions and need to be addressed if present.
