Unless your doctor has you on a special treatment plan, dental exams and cleanings are generally scheduled every six months. During your dental exam, a thorough exam of the mouth and jaw will take place. This exam is called a comprehensive exam, which includes:
- Dental X-Rays - X-rays will be taken to check for any changes that may have occurred that needs further investigation. This is important in case of the introduction of an abscess, cyst, tumor, or decay.
- Dental Cleaning - A thorough dental cleaning which includes the removal of plaque, tartar (calculus) and the polishing of your teeth. This is usually performed by the Dental Hygienist. This cleaning will remove any foreign material and bacteria that can harm the gums and potentially cause Periodontal Disease.
- Oral Cancer Screening - A thorough check of the mouth, face, and neck will help us detect any signs of the presence of oral cancer, or other issues. Oral cancer signs can be seen on the surface as well as by checking lymph nodes and other areas that may give hints or warning signs of issues that are present.
- Check for Tooth Decay - Of course, surface checks on the teeth and around existing dental restorations will be made to see if tooth decay exists.
